Editor window

The editor window (HTML Inspector)

In the editor window you can edit the source code of the current HTML file or just view it. You can call it by selecting:

When editing in the editor window German "Umlaute" and other special characters are not being converted automatically and line wraps in display are only done if "Wrap" is checked (active). You can also launch an "External Editor..." with the current page as parameter. This editor has to be defined in "Edit/Preferences/External Editors" before; for example it can be an HTML source code editor like HTML-Edit, HTML-Pad or HomeSite, but also a offline validator like the CSE Validator.
Note: The changes made in this window are not displayed in the WYSIWYG window until you switch back to it or save the text via Control-S!

To be able to edit the textual content of a frameholder, in most cases index.htm(l) and called "frameset" here, there are three possibilities after opening the frameholder:

  1. Edit the NoFrames content in the WYSIWYG window ("Modify/Frameset/Edit NoFrames Content") and then switch to the respective position in the source code (at this, Dreamweaver marks the NoFrames area as a precaution once)
  2. Click once on one of the frame borders or click with the Alternate key pressed inside any frame. :-) By the way, you can switch between frames with Alt-cursor key.
  3. Open the frames window ("Window/Frames"), select a frame and switch to the editor window.
Note: Frameholder have to be saved using "File/Save Frameset", not using the Save function for normal documents! But for example, you can define in the options whether a frameset possibly open should be saved automatically when opening one of the two browsers for preview.

Unlike the WYSIWYG window in which a nearly infinite undo function exists, you can only undo the last change you made in the editor window.
